Phone plan negotiation — call script
Carriers reserve their best deals for retention, not for billed customers. This script gets you to retention quickly and frames the conversation around staying — which is what retention agents are measured on.

When to use it
Your monthly carrier bill is higher than the publicly advertised new-customer plan, or you've been on the same plan for over 12 months without a renegotiation.
The template
OPENING (to the first agent): "Hi, I've been a customer for [YEARS] and I'm reviewing my plan. Could you transfer me to retention please?" WITH RETENTION: "Thanks for taking the call. I'm currently on [CURRENT_PLAN] at $[CURRENT_PRICE]. I see [COMPETITOR] is offering [COMPETITOR_PLAN] at $[COMPETITOR_PRICE] with the same data and coverage. I'd rather stay — what's the best retention pricing you can offer me today?" IF FIRST OFFER IS WEAK: "I appreciate that. To make it worth staying, I'd need to get closer to $[TARGET_PRICE]. Is there an additional plan-level discount, autopay credit, or loyalty waiver you can apply?" CLOSE: "Great — could you confirm the new monthly total in writing or via SMS, and send me confirmation of any term length? I want to make sure we're aligned."
How to personalize
- [YEARS]
Tenure — retention scoring uses this directly.
- [COMPETITOR] / [COMPETITOR_PLAN] / [COMPETITOR_PRICE]
Use a current public offer with comparable data.
- [TARGET_PRICE]
Slightly below the competitor — leaves room to settle.
Common mistakes
- Talking to the first frontline agent and accepting their offer.
- Asking for 'a discount' instead of a specific number.
- Forgetting to ask for written confirmation.
FAQ
How long should the call take?
Most retention calls resolve in 10–20 minutes once you reach the right team.
What if they say I'm already on the best plan?
Politely ask which retention or loyalty waivers haven't been applied yet.
